Drink This! Beer That's Better For You

According to the USDA National Nutrient Database, one 12-ounce serving of regular beer has 153 calories and 12.64 carbohydrates.

Some experts suggest that the folate found in beer may help reduce homocysteine in the blood and lower homocysteine levels. And lab studies show constituents in beer lower triglycerides and LDL-cholesterol in mice. Also that drinking one beer per day may reduce blood clotting.

Four tips for beer drinkers:
• Be sure to set your limit and pace yourself
• Never drink on an empty stomach
• Between drinks have some water or some other non-alcoholic beverage
• Protect your liver

Beamish Irish Stout
The typical low-cal beer is run through a deflavorizing machine on its way to the bottle. “Most of the calories come from the alcohol content and whatever residual sugars may be left after fermentation,” says Garrett Oliver, brewmaster at the Brooklyn Brewery. We sought a brew that would go easy on the waistline without disappointing the palate. Darker beers have a major advantage here: They’re relatively low in alcohol and have thick, creamy, smoky finishes. When the cans were emptied, Beamish stood tall. It contains about 130 calories per 12-ounce can, but with a full flavor and sturdy dark-chocolate notes.
