This was a long time comin’, and it’s finally here and it was worth the wait to have a 2-time Physique of the Year Winner and Amazonian Goddess herself, Whitney “The Body” Johns grace the cover of Fitness Gurls Magazine.
How does it feel to be crowned Physique of the Year twice in a row, now?
I was super flattered and blown away! There were so many other phenomenal physiques in the running. To say I am honored is an understatement.
Your discipline and commitment to being in such good shape and pursuing a healthy lifestyle are beyond impeccable. What drives you to maintain your physique?
Thank you! With my work keeping my physique in check isn’t really an option- it’s a requirement. So my work obligations alone keep it fairly motivating to keep me on top of my game. I can’t show up to photo shoots or preach fitness-looking sloppy.
Between your workout routine, coaching your clients, and modeling, you’re quite busy. How do you find balance amidst such a busy and on-the-go lifestyle?
Over years of training, my own nutritional/supplementation research, and seeing what works best with hundreds of different clients I’ve gained a clear understanding of what method sticks. I’ve seen how important *balance* and stress management factors in to your physique goals. With this I have been able to come up with a system that doesn’t feel like such a hard arduous work all the time. I have a lot more balance in my approach than I used to, and my physique has actually improved. I think you hit a rhythm once you realize you don’t have to go to non-sustainable extremes anymore because those are actually the least effective long-term. I am happy I’ve come up with an approach that allows me to still have a life and maintain my physique goals.
Since fitness is your passion and a way of life, it’s expected that you are in love with working out. But, on the flip side, is there a type of workout or body part you like to train least?
I have a love-hate relationship with working my delts.
Your photoshoots have incredible range and are often very artistic in their aesthetics to show off a strong body. What is your favorite part of doing a photoshoot?
Thank you! I have a lot of fun with photo shoots. I do feel like photo shoots are a beautiful way of celebrating all the hard work that you put into a healthy lifestyle. It’s the time to allow your discipline to shine, and to do it in a fun, creative way. I love allowing the different facets of my personality to come through in photoshoots, also. Like playing a role that you don’t always get to play in your day-to-day life
Music during gym sessions? Yay or nay? Do you think it detracts or fuels a person’s workout?
The right music can either make or break a workout. Music affects us in so many ways and can literally change our mood and pace entirely.
Could you name one place that you haven’t traveled to yet but have always wanted to visit?
Many! Greece, Spain, Bali, I’d love to do a whole Asia tour as well.
Was leading a fit and healthy lifestyle always a goal for you, or was it something you eventually found along the way? When did you realize this was just the thing for you?
My love of fitness started when I was 16 years old. I grew up suffering from severe migraines, chronic pain, mental health, and gut health issues. I got fed up feeling poorly all the time, so I took matters into my own hands and started searching for solutions. I spent years researching and self-testing. It became clear that to heal my body, I had to make nutrition and lifestyle choices that were going to improve my internal health, not just my outer physique.
